Pysanky Workshop with Jenny Santa Maria In-Person
Pysanky, a revered art form dating back to the Neolithic, involves creating intricate designs on eggs using beeswax and dyes in a layered batik method. Participants will learn a range of techniques, explore traditional motifs, and gain a deeper understanding of pysanky's historical and cultural roots. We dive deep into the meaning of this art, as one that is meant to be given away, in celebration of life and love.
This workshop is a fully immersive, hands-on experience where each participant practices step-by-step wax-resist techniques and dye layering to create their own beautifully decorated egg with guidance and support, along with the skills to continue the tradition at home.
Jenny has been teaching pysanky for over a decade in a wide range of esteemed settings across New England. Her workshops and demonstrations have been hosted by art centers, museums, libraries, and botanical venues. Jenny has also brought this tradition to higher education and retreat environments. Her work has been featured in numerous periodicals, including the Wall Street Journal.
